Beijing Tuye
What Is Beijing Tuye?
Beijing Tuye is a folk sculpture unique to Beijing, originating from traditional Mid-Autumn Festival moon worship rituals and dating back several hundred years.
In traditional Beijing folk culture, Tuye is both:
- A symbolic representation of the Moon Deity, and
- A guardian figure for children, expressing wishes for health, safety, and good fortune.
Unlike general folk clay toys, Beijing Tuye has a clear and stable cultural identity:
- Deeply connected to Beijing’s urban memory
- Closely tied to seasonal rituals, especially the Mid-Autumn Festival
- Combining belief, aesthetics, and playfulness
- One of the most recognizable visual symbols of Beijing folk culture
Artistic Features & Aesthetics
Beijing Tuye has developed a mature and distinctive sculptural language.
Typical characteristics include:
- Upright or mounted seated postures with a stable structure
- Expressions that are dignified yet approachable
- Accompanying elements such as mounts, weapons, or symbolic objects
